Obituary for Hiram (Joe) Andrew Ortega Jr.

Hiram (Joe) Andrew Ortega Jr., 82, of Boise, Idaho, passed away on June 21, 2025. Born on January 18, 1943, in Roswell, New Mexico, Joe proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Corporal. He was deployed to Vietnam from July 1965 to October 1966, participating in significant missions including Operation Harvest Moon and counterinsurgency operations in Da Nang.

For his exemplary service, he received multiple commendations, including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Expert Rifle Badge.

Upon returning home in 1968, Joe's life took a new and meaningful path when he was introduced to Gloria by his Marine Corps friend, Ernie Campos—her brother. He lovingly embraced her three sons, Jeffrey, Richard, and Joseph, as his own, and later welcomed their daughter, Frances. In the early 1970s, Joe became a born-again Christian, dedicating his life to his faith and sharing it with family and friends through his personal testimony and example.

Joe will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria; his children, Jeffrey, Richard, Joseph, and Frances; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Johnathan, Nathan, Victoria, Svetlana, Hilery, Isaiah Josy, and Rivers; and great-grandchildren, Jarren and Callie.

Sipping Italian Sodas
"Rick and I enjoying homemade Italian soda with Joe and Gloria at Aspen Creek’s Father’s Day celebration. Joe’s love, strength, wisdom, faith, and humor are just a few of the things that I admired about him, and that made him the wonderful father that he was. "

Dad said, "Look for a white stallion".
"A few days before dad's passing, we were sitting around talking about "signs from above". We all agreed that dad needed to give us some indication that he was fine by showing us something very particular. Dad says, "Look for a white stallion". We all laughed and responded, "Couldn't it be something a bit more practical, like maybe butterflies or a bird?". Dad insisted on the white stallion. Last week, Lisa and I went to the Veterans Cemetery to make preparations for his service there. As we were leaving, I decided to go a different way than how we got there, which took us along a foothill road near the cemetery. As we are driving along, I see this tall, beautiful white horse all alone in a field and quickly made a U-turn. I yell to Lisa, "There's our sign, the white stallion". I had to stop, get a picture and thank the Lord for our sign. It was an amazing day... "
